Karen Richards

Karen Richards is the Australian National Youth Scrabble Coach and a leading figure in the Australian and global Scrabble community. She was the founding Chair of the Youth Committee of the World English-language Scrabble Players Association (WESPA) from 2005 to 2023. In 2006, she created the World Youth Scrabble Championship, which celebrated its 20th edition in Malaysia in 2025. Karen has coached three World Youth Scrabble Champions and one World Scrabble Champion - her son, Dr. Alastair Richards, who claimed the world title in 2021. A seasoned international competitor, she has represented Australia in multiple World Championship events and Trans-Tasman  Team Challenges. Karen is currently ranked within the top 25 Scrabble players in Australia, with a national rating of 1708. Based in Brisbane, she continues to nurture young talent through regular workshops at Brisbane State High School.
